Hmmm...
1.) Programming. I still love it...there is still that lightness of heart when there's programming to do.
It has been interesting working on different scripts. The UBB one (this one) is extremely well-organized. Making a change typically means changing only one file, it's less than an hour's work.
The product reviews one, now that is all over the place. Typically you'd need to change three different files in three different directories...it's time consuming, but again it is good experience. You have to be able to work on any kind of code.
2.) Gardening. This is a relatively new interest for me. I grew up in apartments so I never had a yard.
The real challenge here is pocket gophers. They destroy almost any plant, by destroying the roots. They're always underground so they have no natural enemies. And all they do is dig, and eat, and dig. They spend all of their time digging and then eating.
The only way to get rid of them is to trap them, and that is not easy to do. I have trapped one... That cut the destruction by about a third though. So it is probably simply a matter of getting better at trapping.
Our next project is planting more bulbs...we have tons of tulips and crocus to put in. As far as I know, gophers don't eat bulbs (knock wood ), except alliums.
Next year I also want to try out pheromone traps. We have pear and apple trees and those get coddling moths. They sell the traps now at Ace Hardware...the trend is toward less poisonous means of pest control.
Then we have to figure out how to plant fruit trees without the gophers getting to them. You have to put down a physical barrier...chicken wire or hardware cloth. That's hard because you have to dig a much larger hole, and you don't want to constrain the roots too much.
Anyhow I do like that...I like working out in the yard. It takes a lot of patience...when we bought this house, the yard was entirely overgrown. It had been a rental for at least twenty years...so it takes many years to get it exactly the way you want it.
3.) Hmmm...I like doing the websites. I've felt very strongly that women need to have a place to go to, on the Net.
Those are my main interests now that don't directly involve the kids. The gardening does in a way...I wouldn't care that much about it otherwise...but I want my kids to have a nice yard with fruit trees and flowers in it. It's more difficult since I can't use chemicals on the plants...kids touch everything. Fortunately there are more and more non-toxic ways of doing it.
Nice poll!
