My sampler from TPC arrived with four leather scents (Dzing!, Knize Ten, Chanel Cuir de Russie, SL Cuir Mauresque), plus two additional leather scents that I picked individually (Daim Blonde and Tabac Blond).
I've tried all of them now. So far my favourites are Tabac Blond and Cuir de Russie. Oddly enough, I don't get a lot of leather from Cuir de Russie, just smooth spices. My skin seems to "eat" this kind of leather note -- I have the extrait of Tabac Blond and I had to put on a lot to make it noticeable, even to me (same as my experience with Parfum Sacre -- maybe it's a Caron thing?).
I can actually see the tobacco leaves when I smell Tabac Blond. I think this is probably the reformulation. It's very smooth. I don't find it particularly "dykey and angular and dark"; on the other hand, neither do I smell ball sweat.
I may have to re-try Vol de Nuit. Maybe the initial hit of Guerlinade will grow on me; the leather drydown is fantastic.
Knize Ten and Cuir Mauresque, to my nose, are both tarry leathers. They remind me of shoe polish. Knize Ten in particular I find unappealing, until the drydown -- I immediately thought "new saddles" and "tackle shop." Cuir Mauresque is a little friendlier because of the spices, but still, yes, very tarry. It's the same kind of leather note as is in Bulgari Black, and I don't like it.
Dzing! was a bit meh to me, somehow. It has a warmth, and I suppose that's what one calls "animalic," and I get the cardboard reference, and it's a nice enough leather...but...it doesn't really do that much for me.
With Daim Blonde I'm getting more apricot (and it's not a fresh apricot, it's a jammy apricot) than anything else.
Reddish brown hair, pale warm-toned skin with freckles, green eyes.
